As our brief is a current music magazine that fits into a gap in the market I have to research what already exists in the current industry. What music magazines are already around? What genre they focus on and what audience they appeal too. By completing this research I will be able to create a magazine which appeals to an audience which is essentially 'deprived' of a music magazine.
When typing into www.google.com- popular music magazines.
I found a list of popular music magazine giving information on there genre and audience.
Genres are highlighted in green :)
1.Alternative Press (or commonly referred to on the website and in the magazine as AP)
The genre is Alternative/Rock Magazine.
The magazine features bands such as Paramore, A Day to Remember All Time Low,
The Maine, Family Force 5, Cobra Starship, 3OH!3, Underoath, Gym Class Heroes,
Blink-182, Radiohead, Veruca Salt, Bring Me The Horizon, Rage Against the Machine,
L7, No Doubt,Weezer, Nine Inch Nails, 30 Seconds to Mars.
2.Kerrang! is a rock music magazine published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United
Kingdom. The magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound made when
playing a power chord on an electric guitar.
3.Mojo is a popular music magazine published by Bauer, monthly in the United Kingdom.
4.XXL is a Hip-Hop magazine, published by Harris Publications.
5.NME (new music express)
6.Rolling Stone
These were the 6 most popular, Q was another magazine amongst the ones I have heard of.
From my research I can see that rock and hip hop are niche markets and I feel there are already a number of magazines that reach out to the audience and a gap in the market is not yet available. I feel that there is something missing, A magazine involving indie music almost like the magazine A&R but also incorporating features of the more popular music magazines such as Q, MOJO and NME, I feel this magazine would appeal to a wider range of people and the market its ready for a magazine such as this.
